The Wetzel County Board of Education recognized the achievements of several students and one principal during the Jan. 2 regular meeting.

The New Martinsville Girl Scout troop opened the meeting by leading those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Brooks Parsons of Magnolia High School was recognized as the 2017 Class-A First Team All-State football, while Isaac Neff and Isaac Price were recognized for 2017-2018 All State Band.

Meanwhile, Hundred High School Principal Beth Sigley recently received the Principals' Leadership Academy Distinguished Scholar award; she was recognized at the Jan. 2 meeting for this honor.

Also, at the Jan. 2 meeting, Wetzel County's public libraries were presented with $4,000 each from the 2017/2018 excess levy funds. The libraries receive this money each school year, thanks to ongoing levy support. Superintendent Warren Grace announced that next year the amount will increase to $10,000 per library. Libraries receiving the funding include Hundred, New Martinsville, Paden City and Pine Grove. The new levy will go into effect July 1.

President Ed Toman took a moment to give thanks for the resounding 89 percent of votes in favor for the school levy. Of the 1,189 voters, only 125 were against the levy.

Superintendent Warren Grace also gave thanks.

"Jo Beth (Simmons) played a key role. The community has been very supportive. I am deeply humbled by those numbers. I think that was a statement within itself. I would like to think we will be good stewards of the money," Grace said.
